From the Top: The House Test
Are you taking the pulse of the person you are meeting with? Get in the listening mood. The best listeners not only listen actively, they think about what’s been said before they share their thoughts.

Try this test to figure out if you're truly listening: Describe what you imagine the guy’s house looks like.

Not so long ago I left a meeting with one of our consultants and asked, "What do you think his house looks like?" She laughed and told me how she imagined his house being a model of organization with every single thing in its place, paintings rich with color and large windows, wide open. I’ve been to his house -– she was right.

Listen well. And think. Building successful relationships isn't about clever tricks, it's just about being really interested in the other person. After listening -- and letting the other person know that you listened -- comes the thinking part. After that, you’ll talk, and you’ll be well listened to.

Good listeners are the people we all want to be with, that’s why they are so successful.
