The International Home & Housewares

The sought-after housewares products in 2007 will be time-savers that
simplify complex tasks.

| Housewares Impressions |
Trendlines consultants share their thoughts about the
2007 Show.
From Trendlines' Consultant Debbie Yerushalmy
Before the International Home & Housewares Show, a number of Israeli companies
asked me, "Why should I go to Chicago?" After "experiencing" the
Show and visiting downtown Chicago housewares retailers, I can say truthfully
that anyone involved in the Israeli home or housewares industries should add
Chicago to their list of shows.
1. The Chicago show is truly an international show with 2,100
exhibitors from over 40 countries. This year there were more than 500 new exhibitors
to the Show. As it has been for the past few years, the Asian presence was very
strong.
2. The range of products in every category is extensive, covering
all price ranges and styles. You can find kitchen utensils and cookware, home
decor items, storage and oranizer solutions, cleaning products, small appliances,
pet products -- and much, much more. Hundreds of new products make their first
appearance at the Show.
3. The workshops and seminars present an excellent opportunity to learn
about the latest trends in marketing, design, and color. In a session
on the importance of market research, the speaker emphasized the need to understand
what the consumer really wants. In another sesson on color, the expert speaker
noted that consumers today are looking for style and color at all price points.
Some experts say that the Americans are the best marketers in the world. International
visitors can get a taste of savvy American marketing not just through the Show
but also by participating in the Housewares Association's retail tour, which
visits key housewares and lifestyle stores in the Chicago area.
From Mark Dollinger, president of Trendlines
America
The Housewares Show gives you an opportunity to see consolidations at
work ... on the supplier side. (In the Trendletter, I've written about
consolidation among retailers. Read "The U.S. Retail Landscape" below.)
An aggressive group of companies is acquiring medium and (sometimes) large companies
at a record pace. These companies include Lifetime Brands, Jardeen, and Groupe
Seb. However, what is intriguing about walking down the aisles of the Show is
that there have never been a larger number of exhibitors. Why? Although medium-
and large- size companies are being acquired, record numbers of start-ups continue
to emerge. Innovative companies continue to sprout up in and industry and market
that embraces newness and the entrepreneurial spirit. See you at next year's
Show!

| A Colorful Preview |
Lee Eiseman, an internationally renowned color
expert, will be giving two presentations at the 2007 International Home & Housewares
Show. She has devised eight color palettes for home
furnishings in 2008 that
will be featured in the ColorWatch exhibit by Pantone. (Eiseman is the
executive director of the Pantone Color Institute and director of the Eiseman
Center for Color Information and Training.) (Source: Preview, a
publication of the International Housewares Association, Show sponsors.)
ReCollections: "Interesting new adaptations" with a "link to the past," this
palette includes tapestry blues and muted blue greens, champagne, and warm
peach tones.
Chinoiserie: This palette suggests "the Chinese tradition" with a "glimpse
of China's stylized past preserved in porcelain, ceramics, paintings, and
silky textiles." The palette includes tones of quiet violet, muted lime,
pink, soft greens, and "touch of antiqued Chinese red."
Savories: "In a world filled with stress ... it is important to have some
unadulterated fun in at least one are of living space." Look for "youthful
and whimsical hues" here with "decadent chocolate" and "appetizing brights."
High Profile: These are the "sleek, trim and forever contemporary"
hues of white, black, brown, "silvery grays" with accents of fuchsia, purple,
gold, and silver.
Agrestic: This palette "reflects the culture of individually
crafted materials" as shown in browns, "tender greens" or "golden yellows"
and pink accents.
Nuances: Home furnishings require neutrals, "classic,
nature hues" such as rose, brown, and "reddish plums, and green-tinged
bronze."
Ethnic Chic: The colors of this palette incorporate the
"styling and color language of another culture." Look for "rich hues of
deep purple," yellow and burnt orange, blue and brown.
Wellspring: Inspired by the "earth's most precious commodity, water," this palette
has shades of blues and aquas, with tones of green, violet, and indigo.

Fast-Growing Product Segments for 2007 |
| The International
Housewares Association (IHA), sponsors of the International Home & Housewares
Show, has identified four fast-growing product segments that
are driving the housewares industry in 2007. |
| 1. Juice Extractors |
Driven by increased awareness of the health benefits of juicing and a commitment
to healthy living, juice extracting has become popular around the world. Studies
suggest that regular juicing reduces high cholesterol and obesity. Some believe
that aging populations will contribute to the popularity of home
juicing in the coming years as a response to the rising costs of health care.
Juice extracting has become even easier as manufacturers expand and enhance
their product lines. Today's
juicers are placed on countertops as "special showpieces."
New features include easier operation and cleaning, dishwasher safe parts,
large capacity feed tubes, and multi-speed settings that can handle all types
of fruits and vegetables.
|
| 2. Plastic Dinnerware |
This category is expected to see heightened
demand in 2007. The trend toward using more casual dinnerware for "everyday
use" has moved it beyond picnics and outdoor entertaining. Many U.S. consumers
now choose plastic as a long-lasting alternative to ceramic dinnerware.
Plastic dinnerware appeals to all age groups because it is inexpensive, available
in sets or as mix-and-match pieces, resists breakage, and stands up to heat.
Manufacturers now offer a range of designs from floral and geometric patterns
to retro and seasonal motifs.
|
|
|
| 3. Wine Accessories |
The U.S. Wine Institute reports a $3 billion increase in U.S.
wine sales over the past year, so it comes as no surprise that this category
shows continued growth.
The sophisticated products in this category include decanters equipped with
vents and vacuum gauges to improve aeration, automated vacuum and pressure
seal pumps, drip rings, and ergonomically friendly bottle openers. Accessories
feature sleek new designs and more high-tech functionality, along with a
number of professional-grade products for home/consumer use.
|
| 4. Kitchen RTA Furniture |
Storage space and counter space are always at a premium, even
in large kitchens. Kitchen RTA furniture present a perfect solution for
preparing, organizing, and serving.
Moveable kitchen islands with concealed storage compartments
give extra workspace and double as breakfast bars. Collapsible countertop
surfaces provide workspace solutions for those with limited space.
RTA cabinet pantries and rolling carts are other space-enhancing solutions.
RTA furniture manufacturers offer high-quality finishes from reflective stainless
steel and colorful veneers to natural oak and high-gloss cherry wood with
granite countertops.
