  A Successful Summer Experience

If there's one thing I've learned, it's that the knowledge gained within the walls of a university does not compare to the experience and knowledge gained "on the job."

summerAs a business and music major at Stern College in New York, this summer internship presented an exciting opportunity to become more exposed to the Israeli business environment and economy. I was fortunate enough to have joined and worked with this talented team on a number of projects in industries ranging from semiconductors and pharmaceuticals to biotech and high tech. Not only has the experience helped me become more well rounded in my knowledge of business, but I have come to see that education and knowledge span beyond the corners of my own domain and interests.

"Success, in a generally accepted sense of the term, means the opportunity to experience and to realize to the maximum the forces that are within us."

David Sarnoff

I've seen first hand that business is not just about the technicalities; it's a conduct, a relationship, and a system. Beyond the wealth of knowledge regarding business plans, business profiles, market research, and marketing communications, I have learned an inordinate amount about maintaining a work and business ethic.

At the beginning of the month, I spent time with each individual on the team learning about their specific, specialized field. Each person was welcoming and encouraging, which helped my adjusting to a new country, a new community, and a new industry. Because of the support I received from the staff members throughout the month, I feel I am much better prepared to take on the challenges of the business world. My experience at Trendlines has proven to be an immense growth experience on an intellectual as well as personal level.

Members of the staff have shown me how to manage time and stress, how to deal with people, and how to show respect in marketing meetings with clients. These life skills were all in addition to learning how to research, how to write business profiles, business plans, and marketing strategies, and the proper business etiquette for meetings and interactions with clients.

John Naisbitt, the author of Megatrends, made the famous statement, "We are drowning in information and starved for knowledge." I was not just fed information this summer. I have received a business education that has helped me become more knowledgeable. This experience has provided and equipped me with the tools to undertake the next stage of my life with passion, fervor, excitement, and exhilaration.

There are not enough words to express my gratitude to Steve, Todd, Ron Lachman, and the entire team for their support and time and for allowing me this fascinating summer experience. Success is often not the end result, but rather the journey, the path, and the people you meet along the way.

The Trendletter team welcomes your comments.
