FROM THE TOP: Looking Back at the Year Ahead
The New Year is fast approaching and, with
it, the opportunity to take a step back and contemplate the
life we are leading -- sort of an inward, intimate performance
review. Although this review will naturally include how we
have stacked up as family members, as friends, as community
members, and (for the believers among us) as God's children,
we cannot exclude our working lives from the scrutiny. After
all, most of us spend at least one quarter of our waking
hours at work.
So here are the questions that I find myself asking around this time of year:
• Have I helped to maintain an environment
in which the Trendlines team can look forward to coming into work each day?
• Have I let each one of them know how much
I appreciate their hard work, loyalty, and professionalism?
• Have I been careful about giving credit to
others for their contributions to the successes of the last year?
• Have I succeeded in conveying to our clients
and business associates how much they matter, how appreciative we are of the
confidence they place in us?
• Have I been honest and upright in my dealings
with others?
Inevitably, I find myself squirming uncomfortably under the hot spotlights of
such difficult questions. I assuage my conscience with thoughts like "Come on,
no-one's perfect." But mainly I take a deep breath and say "Where there's life,
there's hope -- next year I'll try to do better."
On behalf of the entire Trendlines team, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year -- and a little bit of peace wouldn't hurt either.

Director

The
Trendlines Summer Reading List |
|
Maura: The
Coffee Trader by David Liss. A story of cutthroat financial
schemes, merciless creditors, collapsing markets and deceitful
men. Great characters and great story.
Kippy: Russian Debutante's
Handbook by Gary Shteyngart. I picked this
up in the airport just before getting on a 12-hour flight.
Having no prior knowledge of the book or its author, I was
pleasantly surprised to find the long flight over in what
seemed like no time at all and myself completely emerged
in the adventures of Vladimir Girshkin, a 1970s Russian-Jewish
immigrant to the United States who finds himself fleeing
his adopted homeland back to the former Soviet Union. The
adventures of this young, never-really-assimilated-into-American-mainstream
bachelor makes for a thrilling read and offers telling
insights into the quirks of assimilation for immigrants everywhere.
Todd: With the new Superman movie out, I suggest
a re-reading the Superman comic books. They're fast, filled with
action, hold your attention, and slip easily into any briefcase.
Steve: I have been reading the Bible from the beginning
(never done it before) and am up to the Book of Isaiah. My
review: A really strange book and our ancestors came from
highly dysfunctional families -- makes you wonder how we
got here. A lot of business and marketing lessons inside,
including negotiations (successful and otherwise), branding
and rebranding, contracts, and cross-cultural challenges!
Naomi: The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch
Albom. A quick summer read that is exactly like the movie and
leaves you with something to think about but nothing to depress you!
Karen: I found it difficult to read novels this summer
because of the war, so I focused on reading magazines (Vanity
Fair and Gourmet) and writing my blog.
