Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is an infection of the lower respiratory tract that is caused by microorganisms. Typically, it develops more than 48 hours after mechanical ventilation (through intubation with an endotracheal tube). In the United States, there are >50,000 cases of VAP annually.*
*Sources: As many as 28% of patients on mechanical ventilation have VAP (Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia Overview of Nosocomial Pneumonias. 2015. Medscape); estimates from the Centers for Disease Control (Ventilator-Associated Event. Jan 2019. [PDF]) indicate more than 300,000 Americans are on mechanical ventilation yearly.
